Kilimanjaro

Mt Kilimanjaro (or ‘Kili’ as this mountain is affectionately known) is a dormant volcano comprised of three cones – Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira, with Kibo being the highest.  Kili is the choice of many people wanting to experience their first big expedition, their first big climb and experience high altitude, whilst at the same time experiencing the diverse and rich culture of Africa’s Tanzania, with the opportunity to join an amazing safari, which we recommend that you consider doing after your climbing experience.
On the mountain, expect amazing and ever-changing flora and fauna, share your experience with local people, have a lot of fun getting to know and walking with your team members and the Expedition Base team: you and everyone with you is part of our fun team.  Kili is located in Tanzania, not far from the border of Kenya. Many famous game-viewing parks surround Kili, including Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorogoro Crater.   The Serengeti is not too much further away and easily accessible from your base for your Kili climb (of either Arusha or Moshi, depending on your choice of climbing route).
Each safari experience is quite difference so we would recommend that you try to fit in at least a 3 day safari on your trip.
Tanzania is the largest country of East Africa, being almost 950,000 sq km, with a population of more than 55 million people (approximately, based on 2016 figures).  You can expect that your guides have multiple Kili and / or other big mountain summits, with sound knowledge and experience to help you reach your goal of standing at the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.  Your guides know the mountain, know altitude, and know expeditions and all they entail so expect to be well looked after on your journey.  On top of that, your guides are a whole lot of fun.On trips like Kili, you want to know you will be fed well, and kept fueled up for your mission – with Expedition Base that is something we specialise at, and your daily menus won’t disappoint.   Some limitations apply due to local conditions, but we do our best to ensure you get the best of what is available. If you have special food requirements, don’t worry, we cover that off when you book with us for your trip.

Which route?

Expedition Base offers three enticing routes on this amazing mountain.  People choose different routes for very different reasons: difficulty, scenery, and time available, time of year etc.  If you climbed all 3 routes, as many people have done and more, in many ways you will feel like you have climbed 3 different mountains! Each route delivers a very different experience.  The choice is yours – either which way you choose to go, expect to have an amazing time.
If you asked us which route was our favourite we would be hard-pressed to say because each route is special in its own way and impresses people for very different reasons.  If you are unsure of which one to choose, contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. So, be sure to have a look at the safari trips that you can add onto your climb (details below).

What are the costs?

Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will give you trip costs on application.  The costs listed with each trip below are indicative only as much depends on time of year and specific inclusions and add-ons you may want or require.  The indicative costs are for a minimum of 4 clients on your trip. Therefore, the actual costs may be more or less, depending on numbers, route and inclusions.
Many operators on Kili quote a low cost for their trips, and then you discover there are a lot of additional costs such as airport transfers, hotels, extra meals, larger than usual tips, permit fees but with an enticingly low trip cost quoted.  At Expedition Base, we like give you as much information as possible upfront so that there are no unexpected surprises for you.
Since many Expedition Base clients like to add-on trips, such as climbing Mt Meru (4,565m) or going on a 2, 3 or 4 day safari, or clients come and go from and to other tours in other countries in Africa or elsewhere, we recommend you contact us to tell us what you would like, and we will assist by tailoring an itinerary and experience that not only meets your requirements but inspires and excites you.  Let us organise your land experience for you!
